BA Standard
Vision
Business Analysis at AEMO aims to enable the organisation and its stakeholders to successfully, and consistently, deliver high quality outcomes for projects and other initiatives.
To achieve this, and to help them work easier, smarter, and faster, the following resources are provided to Business Analysts:
-
Standardised processes and frameworks
-
Standardised artefact templates
-
Definitions of requirement levels
-
Roles and responsibilities to create, review and sign off artefacts
-
Mapping of business analysis artefacts to other business areas' artefacts, such as Architecture, to provide common understanding of cross-functional dependencies and relationships
-
Mapping of business analysis artefacts with the various phases of project delivery
These resources are curated and maintained by the Business Analyst Community of Practice (BA CoP), with a goal to reduce rework and provide AEMO's BA Community with the tools they need to be successful in their projects.
Furthermore, the BA CoP provides a space for Business Analysts across the organisation to collaborate, problem-solve, share knowledge, develop capabilities and support one another.
Key principles of this practice
- Support - providing a safe space for all members, of all levels to share their voice and be valued.
- Evolution - aiming to build towards an overall uplift of our outputs, capabilities and standards.
- Commitment - being a member of the BACoP is a commitment to participating as actively as possible in community events and activities.
- Consistency - regular meetings and input is expected from all members to keep momentum and achieve goals.
- Transparency - openness towards being honest even when it is difficult with a view to getting the best outcomes for everyone.

- Business Analysis Ways of Working
The purpose of the Business Analysis Framework is to provide a reference point to BAs and adjacent roles as to how business analysis slots into overall project delivery. The framework provides guidance on Waterfall, Agile and Hybrid project methodologies and provides clarity on which artefacts are required and when. The standard artefacts also cover those produced by Architecture given the nature of the relationship between BAs and Architects during the lifecycle of the project and the dependencies that arise. For more on artefacts, see Templates & Guides.
This presentation gives an overview to the framework developed under the NEM Reform Program in 2023, that is currently being considered for company-wide roll out.
This approach can be used as a reference point for BAs to manage their project activities and ensure alignment with Architecture in particular, as well as the broader project phases and check points.
The Business Analysis Templates & Guides contain the standardised templates to be used by Business Analysts on their projects and guidelines as to how to use them. The current templates that fit into the standard business analysis framework and align to industry standard (IIBA) are:
Level 1 Business Requirements Document
Level 2 Stakeholder Requirements Document
Level 3 Functional Requirements Document
Level 3 Non-functional Requirements Matrix
